Despite its impressive natural environment, Valdez is perhaps one of the most popular destinations in Alaska. And really, the people do not have much to offer. That if, lovers or those who kayak in search of marine glaciers, is an ideal destination. running Valdez is the largest city of Prince William Sound. Located at the eastern end of the Gulf of Alaska, the port is not frozen over northern North America. Its location makes receive the highest rainfall in the state.
We went to Valdez looking glaciers and icebergs. There are several possibilities. The most prominent are the boat tours and canoe trips. The most popular destinations for both activities are the Columbia Glacier, Valdez Glacier, Shoup Glacier, and others including trekking on ice. Since we had already made the trek Wrangell - St. Elias NP, wanted to sail near a glacier. The first day we Valdez dedicated to study all the options. The kayak is much cheaper than the Prince William running Sound in Kenai Fjords National Park, because running the distances to travel by boat to the place where it landed kayaks are much lower. running
Thus, the activity was kayaking. The wanted to do or to Valdez Glacier running or the Columbia. The Columbia Glacier is the largest in the area, but Valdez has the attractive, well into the season, there are caves waterways with kayaks. We get there too early, but it's worth asking! Therefore, kayak Columbia was our choice.
The Columbia Glacier is one of the most obvious evidence of melting glaciers. In the past 20 years, has retreated 20 km, in addition to go shrinking in height. If it continues at this rate, hence not much longer can be seen from the sea ... This decline running so fast, however, is the cause of hundreds of icebergs that float around the fjord that has left the glacier fer- behind.
As we explained, this decline is not only due to climate change and global running warming that is leading, but also an effect caused by burning coal. It is seen that this mineral to burn it, releasing black particles that when they go to a glacier and deposited them make darken the color of it. This attracts more sun rays that make more warm surface and then melts the ice. Then you have a time-lapse showing the retreat.
Although it may be worrying that effect, I must say that surf kayak amidst all these icebergs was a unique experience. All offer there, we did it with Pangea and our guide in Zac (a local area experienced sailor) finished round experience.
